Ik probeerde twee weken fan te zijn van Novak Djokovic

In de zomer van 2020 was ik een paar weken fan geworden van Novak Djokovic. Maar mijn vrienden en de Serviër zelf maakten dat onmogelijk.  

Als Commodus eindelijk Ceasar is geworden, blijft hij jaloers naar generaal Maximus Aurelius kijken. Maximus is in de film Gladiator namelijk wél unaniem geliefd bij het volk en zijn leger en de door Joaquin Phoenix gespeelde Commodus niet. Ik moest daaraan denken toen ik het zoveelste artikel las over het gebrek aan bewondering voor Djokovic.

Het is geen gebrek aan populariteit. Het is pure haat die Djokovic moet counterpunchen. ‘Als Djokovic maar niet wint. Dat vind ik zo’n vreselijke vent’, zegt mijn moeder over de nummer 1 van de wereld, bij de start van elk grandslamtoernooi. Zij is Nadal-fan. Ik vermoed vanwege zijn uiterlijk.

Ik had in 2020 heel even een periode dat ik een ‘Djokovic-moment’* noem (* vrij naar David Foster Wallace, in Roger Federer as Religious Experience) ). Na de gewonnen Australian Open vond ik het gebruikelijke discours rondom Djokovic vervelend. Altijd hetzelfde gedoe over het gebrek aan populariteit, terwijl hij toch voor de achtste keer Down Under had gewonnen. In eerste instantie vreet ik dat soort artikelen als koek. Djokovic kan nog zoveel ballen halen en briljante backhands slaan met waanzinnig voetenwerk. Ondanks de beste hand-oog coördinatie van de tennistour is de essentie van het spel van Djokovic voor haters makkelijk samen te vatten: hij laat de ander slecht spelen, en creëert zelf weinig openingen. In het Engels: ‘He makes the other guy look bad.’ ­

Djokovic is de wurgslang onder de toptennissers, die zijn slachtoffers verstikt. Een tennisser die alle wapens uit de handen slaat van zijn tegenstanders. Djokovic degradeert zijn uitdagers tot gefrustreerde hoogspringers, die de lat zo hoog moeten leggen om een punt te scoren, dat ze altijd voor te veel gaan, en als Icarus de vleugels verbranden, op weg naar de hemel. Of hij is, zoals een televisiecommentator mooi verwoordde, de ‘zakkenroller’. Een speler lijkt soms zeker van winst tegen Djokovic, maar voordat iedereen het doorheeft staat de Serviër alweer met de beker een overwinningsspeech te geven.

De Serviër heeft op alle vragen een antwoord, countert schoonheid met efficiëntie, maar er lijkt geen diepere laag in het spel of de persoonlijkheid te zijn die de fans betovert. De allerbeste manier om Djokovic te bespelen is dan ook om consequent de bal door het midden van de baan terug te slaan.

Toch was er na de achtste Australian Open-zege langzaam iets in mij geslopen, dat steeds meer bewondering kreeg voor wat Djokovic aan het doen was. Misschien was het puur opportunisme, waarom ik in 2020 overstag ging. Een soort zelfbescherming voor alle grandslamoverwinningen die nog gaan komen.

Na hem jarenlang geobserveerd te hebben, en honderden keren te hebben gehoord van tennissers dat hij nep is, een robot, een vervelende Oostblokker, theatraal, de satan van het tennis is, de gevallen Balkanse engel, die er alleen maar op uit is om de tennissende Messias uit Zwitserland of de sympathieke Spaanse visser te dwarsbomen, begon ik steeds meer respect te krijgen voor zijn prestaties.

Misschien uit opstandigheid of zelfbehoud begon ik hem met andere ogen te bekijken. Ik probeerde te genieten van de rauwe vechtersmentaliteit, van een man die opgroeide in de oorlog. Van de zoveelste bizarre backhand, die hij al slidend naar de hoek perfect counterde.

Dat luchtte op.

Ik herinnerde me hoe het is om de Serviër live te zien spelen. ‘A skinny Serb’ zijn de woorden van John McEnroe en dat is de spijker op zijn kop. Het atletische, lange, sluike lichaam. Zo glad en flexibel dat het altijd indruk maakt als je hem in het echt ziet. Slanker dan slank, zonder dat hij anorexia heeft. Een superatleet, met toevallig een tennisracket in zijn hand.

Het Djokovic-fanzaadje dat ik kunstmatig had geplant, woekerde zo snel als onkruid in mijn Fedal-hersenen. Ik begon Djokovic-fan te worden. Een paar weken probeerde ik ernaar te leven.

Het hele gebeuren nam me over.

Fan zijn van Djokovic was een warm bad. Ik verwachtte er veel van, en kreeg er veel voor terug. Ik werd meteen rustig van binnen, toen ik Djokovic eenmaal accepteerde als de beste tennisser ooit in plaats van de grote vijand. Ik kon eindelijk rustig naar een toernooi kijken, zonder te hopen dat de Serviër uitgeschakeld zou worden. Ik hoefde niet bij elke draw te kijken of Federer alsjeblieft niet in hetzelfde kant van het schema zat als Djokovic. Elke loting was een goede loting.

Mijn enthousiasme bereikte mijn vrienden, opvallend genoeg allemaal lid van de Roger Federer-fanclub. Ik stuurde een filmpje van Djokovic, die op zijn speciale manier het publiek bedankte, dat gebaar dat hij ooit van Andre Agassi had gekopieerd, alsof hij met zijn armen het publiek wat geeft. Het was een beetje als geintje bedoeld, om mijn nieuwe tennisleven als Djokovic-fan een beetje in te luiden. Ik werd gesommeerd om dat nooit meer te doen. ‘Hou op, hou op. Ga weg met die joker. Kan dit niet zien. Wil dit nooit meer zien. Niet doen. Echt niet doen.’

Ik begon de eenzaamheid van de twee Djokovic-fans te begrijpen, die ik ken. Eentje is een Indiase taxichauffeur in Delhi. Ik was zelf nog helemaal in de wolken van het Federer-jaar 2017, met de Australian Open en Wimbledon-zege, toen ik in december van dat jaar, op weg naar het vliegveld in Delhi, met de taxichauffeur casual over tennis begon te praten. De man bekende al in de eerste minuut dat hij helemaal gek was van Djokovic. Voor ik het wist, had ik ‘Why?’ uitgeroepen, wat mijzelf nogal verbaasde. Waarom zou je als Indiase taxichauffeur niet helemaal gek zijn van Djokovic? Misschien keek hij sinds hij fan was ook ontspannen naar de draws. ‘I like the guy. He great player. He always funny. He big joker.’  

De andere Djokovic-adept is een oude teamgenoot. Twee jaar heb ik competitie met deze David gespeeld. Deze man tennist exact zoals Djokovic. Altijd als ik met hem trainde had ik het idee dat ik werkelijk tegen de Serviër speelde, wat mijn fanatisme alleen maar aanwakkerde.

Het was in het begin grappig, maar het bleek vooral frustrerend. Korte samenvatting: alleen als ik op m’n allerbest speelde, had ik een kleine kans. En dan nog ging elke backhand passing langs me. Na een paar oefenpotjes wilde mijn tennisbrein wel oplopen, maar weigerde mijn lichaam als ik naar zijn backhand speelde, zelfs als de kans op een passing onmogelijk leek. Maar het probleem was niet zijn tennisspel, maar zijn adoratie voor Djokovic, wat binnen het tennisteam voor frictie zorgde na elk grandslamtoernooi. Dit zou kunnen veranderen nadat ik geswitcht was van Fedal naar Djokovic. Ik had in ieder geval mijn aanvankelijke emotionele blokkade richting de Serviër geminimaliseerd.

Nadat ik een paar weken mijn Djokovic coming-out had gecommuniceerd aan mijn tennisvrienden, begonnen de eerste scheurtjes zich te vertonen in mijn fan-zijn. Of misschien was het een welgemikte campagne van mijn vrienden. Een tennismaatje stuurde [deze video] op van Djokovic die echt rare bewegingen maakte en overduidelijk aan het acteren is. Naïef, maar die video kende ik nog niet.

Daarna stortte het kaartenhuis van mijn nieuwe perspectief op de tenniswereld heel snel ineen. Djokovic organiseerde trots de ‘Adria-tour’ in Oost-Europa, waar hij een virusontkenner acteerde en ging voetballen, highfiven, in nachtclubs ging feesten met collega-tennissers en dat ook zo nodig op social media moest knallen. Grigor Dimitrov, Borna Coric en Viktor Troicki kregen allemaal corona, net als Djokovic en zijn vrouw. Vader Srdjan Djokovic gaf eerst Dimitrov de schuld, net zoals hij daarna nog even riep, dat hij niet begreep waarom Roger Federer nog tenniste op bijna 40-jarige leeftijd, hij had toch wel wat beters te doen?

Een maand eerder had Djokovic de lachers ook al op zijn hand, toen hij beweerde dat je vervuild water kon zuiveren met je geest.

Gamechanger

Daarna kwam het meest ludieke tennismoment van 2020. Het was een soort 9/11-tennismoment van 2020, een vervelende gamechanger die ook al in 2018 in New York plaatsvond, toen Serena Williams in de finale tegen Naomi Osaka een waarschuwing kreeg, omdat ze gecoacht werd, waarna de wedstrijd ontspoorde.

Bijna elke tennisfan weet nog waar hij was toen het gebeurde, op maandag 7 september 2020.

Ik zat zelf zoals gewoonlijk tussen het werken door random te scrollen op Twitter, toen ik heel vaak de naam Djokovic en default voorbij zag komen. De wedstrijd tegen Carreno Busta had ik nog niet aangeslingerd. Veel vuurwerk verwachtte ik niet van die baseline slug rally’s. Nu wist ik niet hoe snel ik naar Eurosport moest gaan.

Het moment.

Ik heb het nu honderd keer teruggekeken en het verveelt nooit. De achteloosheid, waarmee de beste tennisser van de wereld een bal recht in het oog van een lijnrechter slaat, uit frustratie. De wreedheid van de tennisgoden, die ervoor zorgen dat hij met deze niet-gemikte bal precies het oog raakt. De heftige reactie van de lijnrechter en op het oog serieus letsel. Hoe de Serviër er nog zichzelf uit probeert te lullen, terwijl iedereen weet dat als je een scheidsrechter of lijnrechter raakt, meteen gediskwalificeerd wordt. Ook als je 26 wedstrijden achter elkaar hebt gewonnen en je straks de meeste grandslams van iedereen hebt gewonnen.

‘Default, mister Djokovic’.

Het betekende een aardverschuiving in het tennis. Djkokovic had de grootste kans om de US Open te winnen. Het voorval leek nog mee te spelen in de finale van Roland Garros, tegen Nadal. Hij verloor de eerste twee sets van Nadal met 6-0 6-2 in Parijs. Even daarvoor had hij samen met Vasek Pospisil een concurrent van de ATP gelanceerd, een idee dat meteen al door Federer en Nadal werd gekatapulteerd. Het rampjaar 2020 werd ook voor Djokovic definitief het jaar dat hij zich buiten de baan nogal onpresidentieel gedroeg en afhaakte in de GOAT-discussie.

Enfin.

Ik heb het geprobeerd, maar ik kon en wilde het ook niet meer, na al dat wangedrag. En misschien was de noodzaak voor mij om te veranderen ook wel uitgewist.

Djokovic zal waarschijnlijk alle records veroveren, hij zal de tenniswereld de komende jaren verschroeien met zijn ambitie. Toch zal hij eeuwig als Commodus zijn, die zelfs in 2035, als de voormalige ‘Grote Drie’ als klappende tennislegendes fungeren bij prijsuitreikingen, moet aanhoren hoe het volk, zelfs na hun tennispensioen, tien keer harder klapt als Federer de baan betreedt.

Djokovic is na het jaar 2020 definitief Commodus. De villain van het beroemdste tennisrijk ooit, waarin vrienden Federer en Nadal cijfermatig de mindere zullen zijn van de Serviër, maar wel overal lachende gezichten zullen treffen, waar ze ooit komen in hun leven.

Ik probeerde in december nog een keer met een van mijn beste vrienden over de Serviër te praten, maar ik kwam niet verder dan één zin. ‘Walgelijk. Walgelijk. Met zijn maniertjes en dat neppe gedrag. Houd alsjeblieft op over Djokovic.’
